License terms
Terms for downloading, installing and using Vaultwitness. Last updated: 2026-10-15.
By downloading, installing or using Vaultwitness you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't download, install or use it. If you accept them for a company, you confirm you may do so on its behalf.
1. Who we are
Vaultwitness is made by an independent developer ("we"). You can reach us at [email protected]. Payments are handled by Lemon Squeezy, our reseller and merchant of record; its buyer terms apply to the purchase itself.
2. What you get
- Free plan: use Vaultwitness on up to 2 servers, for as long as you like. One Free installation per organization.
- One-time licenses (Starter, Business): use the version you bought on up to the number of servers of your plan, forever. Updates released within one year of purchase are included; after that you can renew updates.
- Subscription (Scale): use Vaultwitness on the number of servers you pay for (at least 20), with all updates, while the subscription is active.
- Trial: all features for 14 days from the first agent report, once per installation.
A "server" is a machine running a Vaultwitness agent. A license is activated on one dashboard installation and can't be moved to another one without a new activation.
3. What you may not do
- Share, resell or publish your license key or activation files.
- Remove or work around the license checks of the dashboard server.
- Run several Free installations to avoid buying a license.
4. The agent's source code
The agent is open source under the Apache License 2.0, which applies to it instead of these terms. The dashboard server is not open source.
5. Refunds and cancellation
You can get a full refund within 14 days of purchase: write to [email protected]. A subscription can be cancelled any time; it stays active until the end of the paid year and the unused part isn't refunded. After a refund the license is disabled; a server activated offline keeps its license only until its temporary activation file expires (see how activation works).
6. When a license ends
When a subscription or trial ends, or a temporary activation isn't confirmed, the dashboard moves to the Free plan. Monitoring keeps running for 2 servers and nothing is deleted; buying or confirming a license restores the rest.
7. No warranty
VAULTWITNESS IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITH ALL FAULTS AND WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING ANY WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ACCURACY OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.
In particular, we do not promise that:
- your backups can be restored, are complete or are free of damage;
- every problem is found, or that a result shown as "OK" or "restorable" is correct;
- alerts and reports arrive on time, or at all;
- the software runs without errors or interruptions.
Vaultwitness is a monitoring aid. It is not a backup and it does not replace your own restore tests. Its results are for information only.
8. You use it at your own risk
- You alone are responsible for your data, your backups and your decisions based on what Vaultwitness shows.
- The agent runs with root rights. It reads your backup repositories, runs restic or borg commands and restores test files to a temporary folder. This uses CPU, disk and network, and may cause charges from your storage provider (for example for downloads from cloud storage). Those costs are yours.
- Try it on a non-critical system first, and keep independent copies of important data.
- Don't rely on Vaultwitness as the only safeguard where a failure could cause injury, death, environmental damage or large financial loss.
9. Limitation of liability
TO THE FULLEST EXTENT ALLOWED BY LAW, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR ANY LOSS OR CORRUPTION OF DATA, LOSS OF PROFIT, REVENUE OR BUSINESS, DOWNTIME, COST OF REPLACEMENT GOODS OR SERVICES, OR CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES, HOWEVER CAUSED AND EVEN IF WE WERE TOLD THEY MIGHT HAPPEN.
Our total liability for all claims together is limited to the amount you paid us for Vaultwitness in the 12 months before the claim. If you use the Free plan or a trial, that amount is zero.
10. Claims against us from others
If someone else (for example your client or employer) makes a claim against us because of how you used Vaultwitness, your data or your breach of these terms, you will cover our reasonable costs and damages from that claim.
11. Other people's services
Vaultwitness works with software and services we don't control: restic, Borg Backup, borgmatic, your storage providers, email and Telegram, and Lemon Squeezy. We are not responsible for them, for their changes or for their failures.
12. Trademarks
restic, Borg Backup and borgmatic are independent open-source projects. Vaultwitness works with them but is not affiliated with, sponsored or endorsed by any of them. Other product and company names mentioned on this site belong to their owners and are used only to describe compatibility or for comparison.
13. Ending these terms
If you break these terms, your right to use the paid features ends, without a refund. Sections 7–11 stay in force after that.
14. Your legal rights
Some countries don't allow certain warranties or liability to be excluded, for example for intent, gross negligence or under consumer-protection law. Where that applies, our warranties and liability are limited to the minimum the law allows, and nothing here takes away rights you have by law.
15. General
These terms are the whole agreement between you and us about Vaultwitness. If a part of them turns out to be invalid, the rest still applies. We may update these terms; the version valid on the day you bought applies to that purchase, and the current version applies to the Free plan and trials.
